About our cause
A carer is someone who has an unpaid role looking after a family member or friend who cannot manage without their help. They care for people who ill, disabled, frail, has a mental health issue, living with a long term condition such as dementia, multiple sclerosis, etc., or suffering from substance abuse.
Many carers do not realise that they are a carers, they are caring alone or have the primary responsibility of caring within the household, which can lead to them missing out on vital information, advice and support. They often have to give up work to cope with the demand of caring, become isolated and fall into financial hard-ship. The demand of their caring responsibilities can be overwhelming resulting in them forgetting to look after their own health and wellbeing as a result. When a carers’ own health deteriorates or they reach breaking point this can have a serious impact on them, their families, and the person they are caring for.
Brent Carers Centre provides a much valued service for unpaid carers across the borough of Brent
We need your help so we can continue to develop and deliver meaningful support services to some of most vulnerable, less visible and least supported members of the community - Unpaid Family Carers. We continually work on improving our services to better meet their health, well-being & social care needs!
Abi mother of three, says “Brent Carers’ Centre has provided a lifeline for myself and my children. From emotional support, practical support, respite, counselling and a grant when we faced a crisis, we don’t know how my family would have survived without the support. I’m devastated that support services are being reduces when they are so many carers and their families who need help.”
It is estimated that there are currently over 30,000 carers in Brent, with over 6,000 carers currently known to Brent Carers Centre.
Most carers do not realise they are a carer and care for many years before being identified. During this time they may lose their jobs, miss school or fail exams, become isolated, stressed and depressed, face debt and financial hardship, whilst they save the economy millions of pounds looking after their loved ones.
Brent Carers Centre have been supporting carers in Brent since 1994.
